Men’s Personal Branding Photography - What Gives!

The majority of my personal branding clients are women. Coaches, consultants, speakers, solopreneurs, across all of them, men are in the minority. And that's not because men don't need great photography.

It's because most men haven't yet worked out that their visual brand is quietly costing them business.

Why Men Avoid Personal Branding Photography

There's a version of this that comes down to ego, men thinking they don't need to worry about how they look. But in my experience, it's more practical than that.

Men simply don't know where to start.

Women tend to have a stronger instinct for what works visually. They know what to wear, how to present themselves, and the kind of images that will land well with their audience. Men often don't, and rather than get it wrong, they do nothing. They stick with a LinkedIn headshot from five years ago, or a photo a friend took at a conference, and quietly hope nobody notices.

They notice!

Your visual brand is often the first thing a potential client sees before they speak to you. If your photography looks like an afterthought, that's the impression you leave. In a world where your competitors are showing up consistently and professionally online, a poor image isn't neutral; it actively works against you.

What Personal Branding Photography Actually Does

A good set of personal branding images does three things.

It builds trust before you've even said a word. When someone lands on your website or LinkedIn profile, they're making a judgment call in seconds. Professional, well-considered photography signals that you take your work seriously.

It communicates personality. A headshot tells people what you look like. A personal branding shoot tells them who you are and how you work, what your environment says about you, and what it might feel like to work with you.

That's a very different thing.

It gives you content. One well-planned shoot gives you images for your website, LinkedIn, proposals, press, speaking engagements, and social media. Done properly, it lasts eighteen months to two years before you need to think about it again.

The Men Who Get This Right

The men I've photographed who see the best results from their personal branding photography share one thing in common: they treat it like a business investment, not a vanity project.

They're not necessarily the most stylish people I've worked with. Some of them had never thought much about clothing before we worked together. What they had was a clear sense of who they are professionally and a willingness to let that come through on camera.

That's all you need.

The rest is my job.

What to Expect from a Shoot with Me

Before we do anything, we have a Zoom call. This is where we work out exactly what your shoot needs to achieve, which platforms you're active on, who your audience is, what you want people to feel when they encounter your brand, and what that means for locations, clothing, and the overall look and feel of the images.

Most men come to that call thinking they have nothing to wear. Most of them are wrong and they just haven't thought about their wardrobe in terms of their brand before.

By the end of the call, we'll have a clear plan.

On the day itself, my job is to make you look like yourself, just the best version of it. If you find being photographed awkward, you're not alone. Almost everyone does at the start.

Within twenty minutes, most people forget the camera is there.

What you end up with is a set of images that actually look like you, reflect what you do, and work hard across everything you put your name on.

A Practical Note on Clothing

You don't need to go shopping. You need to wear clothes that fit well, that you feel comfortable in, and that are appropriate for the professional context you want to project.

A well-fitted suit works. So does a good quality shirt with smart trousers. So does a more casual look if that's authentic to your brand. What doesn't work is anything that distracts — loud patterns, logos, clothes that don't fit properly.

Bring three or four options to the shoot. We'll make a call on the day based on the locations and the light.

Is Personal Branding Photography Worth It for Men?

If you're building a business, a profile, or a reputation — yes. The men who invest in their visual brand consistently look more credible, attract better clients, and charge higher fees than those who don't. That's not a claim I'm making up. It's what I see in the work.

The question isn't really whether personal branding photography is worth it. It's whether you can afford to keep showing up online looking like everyone else.
